Description

Folio 11: case no 30, William [Joseph] Shewbridge, aged 29, Leading Stoker; sick or hurt, debility from ague, contracted at Ascension of a quotidian character; put on sick list, 28 April 1871, sent 24 May 1871 to The Naval Hospital at Simon's Bay.

Folio 11: case no 31, Charles Done, aged 34, Stoker; sick or hurt, tumour in the middle third of the right sternomastoid muscle; put on sick list, 26 April 1871, sent 21 May 1871 to The Naval Hospital at Simon's Bay.

Folio 11: case no 32, Henry Richardson, aged 24, Private Royal Marine, death from drowning, on the night of 8 June 1871 at about 8pm.

Folios 11-12: case no 34, at 10 pm on the night of June 24, reported from the signal station on the top of the crater 1000 feet high that one of a party of marines stationed there was missing, a search was made for him on the summit of the crater - as it was conjecture that in the dark he had wandered too near the edge and fallen over. The night was intensely dark and no trace of him could be found, the search was resumed at the daylight of the following morning and he was found amongst the rocks half way down a distance of about 400 feet from the summit. At first it was reported that he was dead - but on close examination his heart was still beating and on moving him some consciousness of pain was apparent. He was carried below to the Hospital in the settlement and then it was found that he was suffering from concussion of the brain, he was surveyed and invalided at Sydney on 7 October 1871.

Folio 12: case no 35, John Martin, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman, enteritis, he came to Hospital at St Paul's Island complaining of nausea, weakness and severe pain in the left iliac fossa; put on sick list, 17 August 1871, discharged 5 October 1871 to duty.

Folio 13: case no 36, Jacob Ellis, aged 46, Ship's Cook, cardiac disease aneurism; put on sick list, 10 September 1871, invalided 7 October 1871 at Sydney.

Folio 13: case no 37, Jeremiah Meade, aged 29, Captain Fore Top, hematoria; put on sick list, 13 September 1871, invalided 7 October 1871 at Sydney.

Folio 14: case no 38, Nicholas Preston, aged 32, Cooper's Crew, fracture of lower jaw; put on sick list, 8 October 1871, returned 8 October 1871 to his own vessel HMS Rosario.

Folio 14: case no 39, Mr. Henry Cummings, aged 24, Assistant Paymaster, syphilis secondary, was several months under treatment at Haslar Hospital; put on sick list, 28 June 1871, discharged 5 August 1871 to duty.

Folios 18-25: Surgeon's general remarks. The store ship Megaera was commissioned at Sheerness for the purpose of conveying to Australia new Officers and crews to HMS Blanche and Rosario as well as supernumeraries to the vessels on that station. According to the Surgeon the ship was ill adapted for the purpose, the accommodation not sufficient for both officers and men. Added to this the ship was laden with stores which also so impeded ventilation and brought the vessel down very deep, the surgeon also gave an account of the wreck of the ship.
