Description

Folio 23; case no 14, George Alton, aged 28, Gunner Royal Marine Artillery, from HMS Miranda; gun shot wound of left thigh; discharged 9 June 1864 to duty.

Folio 24; case no 15, George G Duff, aged 28, Lieutenant Royal Navy, from HMS Esk; gun shot wound of back and bayonet wounds; on December 31, the Surgeon mentions that this patient was on duty when the Surgeon last heard of him.

Folios 25-26; case no 16, William Alison, aged 25, Leading Seaman, from HMS Esk; gun shot wound of left hand, left hip and chest, ball lodged; sent 24 May 1864 to Military Hospital at Auckland, pension certificate was given, on 24 October, the patient was sent to England.

Folio 26; case no 17, James Knight, aged 37, Captain of Fore Castle, from HMS Esk; gun shot wound of right breast; discharged 12 May 1864 to his ship for further treatment, and was soon well.

Folio 27; case no 18, Edward Martin, aged 29, Able Seaman, from HMS Esk; gun shot wound of right hip; discharged 12 May 1864 to his ship.

(Names and details follow). John Watson, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman belonged to HMS Curacoa; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864. Amos Smith, aged 32, Leading Seaman belonged to HMS Curacoa; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864. Thomas Jerrem, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman belonged to HMS Curacoa; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864. Samuel Ruthvent, aged 27, Able Seaman belonged to HMS Miranda; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864. William Alison, aged 25, Leading Seaman belonged to HMS Esk; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864. Thomas Roberts, aged 21, Able Seaman belonged to HMS Esk; hurts on 29 April 1864 at Tauranga; pension certificate granted on 24 May 1864.

Folios 33-40: Surgeon's general remarks, including an account on the situation and the combined force which attacked the Gate Pah [folio 33]; preparation made for wounded on board Miranda [folio 33]; first examination of cases [folio 34]; accounts of officers of Naval Brigade lying dead and wounded in the trenches in the Pah [folios 35-36]; description of the Pah [folio 36]; wounded of Naval Brigade sent on board the Miranda [folio 37]; the Miranda as a temporary hospital and difficulties in the beginning of dieting and getting nurses [folio 38]; passage to Auckland [folios 38-39]. Also included in the general remarks is an account of the death of William Todman, marine artillery on detached service with Naval Brigade, who fell when asleep into the engine room and was crushed [folio 40].
