Folio 7: List of men sent to the Military Hospital at Sydney, 19 September 1863. George Fry, aged 20, Ward Room Cook's Assistant; disease or hurt, bronchitis. John Allsop, aged 24, Carpenter's Crew; disease or hurt, rheumatism. William Small, aged 20, Sick Bay Attendant; disease or hurt, bronchitis.
Folio 7: Meteorological table for October 1863, recording temperature and barometric pressure three times daily, wind direction and ship's position. With note that the Naval Brigade were landed at Auckland, New Zealand, 17 October 1863.
Folio 8: General record and nosological table for October 1863. There were several diseases of the respiratory organs, including phthisis and pneumonia in men who had been saved from the wreck of HMS Orpheus and remained on station until they were discharged into the Curacoa on her arrival at Auckland. On 17 October 1863, 240 of the ship's company were landed to form a Naval Brigade. These included both the Surgeon and Assistant Surgeon Messer.

Folios 10-23: Journal of the Naval Brigade in New Zealand from the 17 October 1863 to 19 April 1864. Folio 10: HMS Curacoa arrived at Auckland 2 October 1863, orders were received to land a party of the crew to assist the troops under Lieutenant General Cameron 'employed in putting down the native rebellion'. Provisions were issued and they disembarked 17 October. Folio 10 has three drawings; Figure 1, 'Plan of the interior of Pioneer gunboat'; Figure 2, 'An iron plated launch'; Figure 3, the Avon gunboat. All are drawn to scale and are annotated.
Folio 11: 17 October 1863, describes the force disembarked from HMS Curacoa, 125 seamen, 10 officers, 40 marines, 1 [marine] officer, 1 surgeon, 1 assistant surgeon. The force was split in two one marching south along the 'Great South Road', the other going by gunboat Pioneer to the mouth of the Waikato River. There is a description of the three vessels illustrated on folio 10 and the iron plates fitted to make them bullet proof.
Folio 12: 19-27 October 1863, describes the boat journey to the mouth of the Waikato River and entering the river. Descriptions of the surrounding country, an abandoned mission station and friendly Maoris.
Folio 13: 27-28 October, the journey from the mouth of the Waitonga to Maungatawhiri Creek, Tuakau redoubt held by men of the 65th Regiment, a few shots were fired at the boats, rendezvous with the Avon Gunboat, Whaungamarino Redoubt, the Naval Camp on Maungatawhiri creek, with a watercolour 'Plan of Naval Camp on the Maugatawhiri Creek' by A B Messer, description of the camp and swamps.
Folio 14: 29 October - 20 November 1863, the Pioneer under fire at Mere Mere, a force landed above Mere Mere and the position attacked 31 October 1863, two soldiers killed and Alfred Manuel, Ordinary Seaman, HMS Curacoa, wounded by a spent ball and sent to the military hospital at Queen's Redoubt. The Pioneer occupied carrying stores and provisions and reconnoitring Rangiriri. On 20 November 1863, the Maori position at Rangiriri attacked by a force of about 1500 men, 40 were killed and 88 wounded, of which 75 were cared for on the Pioneer and 13 taken on the Avon to the Naval Camp.
