Description

Folio 1: Printed instructions on completing the journal, the nosological tables and general remarks.

Folio 2: Meteorological table for May 1863, recording temperature and barometric pressure three times daily, wind direction and ship's position.

Folio 2: HMS Curacoa commissioned 21 April by Commodore Sir William Wiseman for the Australian Station, the dimensions of the ship and complement of her crew are given. On 29 April the Surgeon joined the ship, Mr W E Boxer, aged 18, Clerk, was sent to Haslar Hospital suffering cynanche parotidea.

Folio 2: Samuel Rook, aged 46, Ropemaker; disease or hurt, four gibrous tumours, two on each fore arm, about the size of pigeon's eggs. Invalided, 8 May 1863.

Folio 2: John Duffy, aged 22, Abel Seaman; disease or hurt, chronic abscess of the neck. Sent to the hospital, 8 May 1863.

Folio 2: Bernard Boyle, aged 17, 2nd Class Boy; disease or hurt, syphilis. Sent to the hospital, 15 May 1863.

Folio 2: John Rudkins, aged 28, Captain of the Mizzen Top; disease or hurt, incised wounds of face, hands and arm, received on shore. Sent to the hospital, 16 May 1863.

Folio 2: William Steadham, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, ulceration of skin in the groin. Sent to hospital, 21 May 1863.

Folio 2: Francis Sharman, aged 29, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, secondary syphilis. Sent to hospital, 21 may 1863.

Folio 2: Edwin Palmer, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, syphilis. Sent to hospital, 23 May 1863.

Folio 2: Note that the ship's company had been on salt rations 7 days and lemon juice was issued on 4 days in May.

Folio 3: Remarks from 27 April to 31 May 1863 and nosological table for the same period. There were a large number of accidents and venereal diseases.

Folio 3: Meteorological table for June 1863, recording temperature and barometric pressure three times daily, wind direction and ship's position.

Folio 4: General record for the month of June 1863 and nosological table. The ship was at sea the whole time except for three days at Funchal, the weather was fine. The diseases are mentioned briefly.

Folio 4: Meteorological table for July 1863, recording temperature and barometric pressure three times daily, wind direction and ship's position.

Folio 5: General record and nosological table for July 1863. The case of Thomas Smith, aged 48, is mentioned. He had been in the Navy 30 years and was a Petty Officer with a 'very good' certificate. Since joining the ship in April he had been 'disrated and otherwise punished for acts which have at last become so outrageous as to leave no doubt of his insanity'.

Folio 5: List of men sent to hospital at Simon's Bay, 21 July 1863. William Stillwell, aged 22, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, phlegmon, syphilis etc. Samuel Douglas, aged 17, 2nd Class Boy; disease or hurt, phthisis. Edward Mills, aged 16, 2nd Class Boy; disease or hurt, catarrh and remittent fever. Peter Simmons, aged 37, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, convalescent after pneumonia. Richard Rowe, aged 26, Captain of the Fore top; disease or hurt, bubos and continued fever. Joseph Parish, aged 21, Gunner Marine Artillery; disease or hurt, sympathetic bubo. William Sparks, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, secondary syphilis. John W Price, aged 22, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, syphilitic rheumatism. David Whittenstall, aged 16, 2nd Class Boy; disease or hurt, [erythema].

Folio 5: List of men invalided at Simon's Bay. George Mills, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, palpitation of heart. Joseph Giles, aged 21, [Private Marine]; disease or hurt, physical incapacity. Richard Richardson, aged 52, Stoker; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Thomas Smith, aged 48, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, insanity.

Folio 6: Meteorological table for September 1863, recording temperature and barometric pressure three times daily, wind direction and ship's position.

Folio 7: General record and nosological table for September 1863. There were a large number of accidents while the men were loading ordnance and stores for New Zealand at Sydney and in a gale shortly afterwards.
