Administrative / biographical background

The Directorate of Colonial Surveys was formed in March 1946 following approval by the Secretary of State for the Colonies in August 1945 for the formation of a central organisation for carrying out geodetic and topographical surveys in the Colonial Empire. Its parent department was the Colonial Office with finance provided under the Colonial Development and Welfare Acts. The name of the Directorate and responsibility for it changed on numerous occasions and finally its name changed in 1991 to Ordnance Survey International, reflecting increasing independence of work for the Overseas Development Agency and a significantly more commercial approach.
