All copyhold land was enfranchised from 1st January 1926, but certain charges and interests in lands remained. These charges called manorial incidents could be extinguished by payment of compensation by the tenant or copyholder to the lord of the manor. All remaining manorial incidents were automatically extinguished on the 1st January 1936, but for a period of five years lords of manors and owners of land were given the right to apply to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for an award determining the amount of compensation for extinguishment.
With the outbreak of war this period for applications was suspended and it was enacted that no applications could be made after 29th November 1939 and before a date to be appointed. By an Order in Council the minister appointed 1st November 1949 as the date from which, for a period of twelve months only, applications could again be made.
