Description

William Marsden. Lieutenant Smith of the Matilda hospital ship has asked for compensation for the Carpenter for a servant. Since the Matilda was re-commissioned in May 1803 with a complement of 35 men, this does not entitle warrant Officers such compensation. Charles Duncombe, the Carpenter, appears to have belonged to the ship when she was in Ordinary and had a complement of 135, which allowed two servants, as the ship was then considered to be a 6th rate. Perhaps a case can be made to allow him compensation for one servant.
