Description

William Marsden. The Sailmakers at Deptford have complained that from 5 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. they are confined to the yard without being given time to take meals with their families, are deprived of the customary hour on Saturday nights and that the chip money, which is enjoyed by mechanics and labourers in yards elsewhere, is denied them. The system established in 1761 was revised in 1802, when new standards were set. They do not think that they can meet these standards by reducing hours.
