- Folio 152. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to R Stone, District Auditor, Derby, giving its opinion on the subject of the overseers' accounts of the parish of Newcastle under Lyme. The overseers who left office in March 1845 were entitled to claim for all payments allowed in their accounts by the late auditor. Nor were they chargeable with loss or deficiency since under the relevant act they were not accountable to the district auditor. The assistant overseer was not their servant and was responsible for his own actions. Finally, it was the opinion of the Commission that the present overseers should repay their predecessors the amount of money they paid out on behalf of the parish (less the income they received), though this point they did not consider enforcible.
