Folio 214. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to William Bolton Girdlestone, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation regarding 'Salaries of Officers' acknowledging receipt of letter dated 22 June 1849 and its enclosures. The Board sanction payment for the officers listed: Mrs Charlotte Dobson - Schoolmistress at a salary at the rate of fifteen shillings a week. Mr Henry Dusautry - Medical Officer - £100 per annum. Mr George Cheesman - Medical Officer - £100 per annum. In the form relating to appointment of James Meallin as Schoolmaster the amount of salary paid was omitted and the Board request 'that you will furnish the information.' The Board go on to point out that in terms of the schoolmaster and schoolmistress salaries that 'the repayment of such salaries from the Government Grant will still depend on the report of the Schools Inspector and the qualifications of the persons appointed.' The grant is for repayment of half the salary for the medical officers, exclusive of the fee for midwifery and surgical operations, the proportion of the salaries of the schoolmaster and schoolmistress are determined by the nature of the certificate awarded by the Committee of the Council on Education. The Board also request to be furnished with the name and address of the treasurer to the guardians of Southampton. Paper Number: 16389/1849. Poor Law Union Number 407. Counties: Hampshire.
