- Folio 196. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board, to William Bolton Girdlestone, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation, acknowledging receipt of letter dated 17 April concerning 'a disputed action in election of Guardians for the Parish of All Saints', and referring to the power of the Board under the Act 5& 6 Vic c 57 s 8, to determine validity of the election. They state that the Poor Law Board have the power under the Poor Law Amendment Act 4& 5 Will 4 c 76 s 41 to issue directions for regulating the elections of guardians elected under local acts, but they have not hitherto issued any such directions. Looking at the various provisions of 5& 6 Vic c 57. They do not think that the legislature intended to confer upon the Poor Law Commission authority to decide questions raised as to the election of guardians where that election does not take place under some order of the Commission. They therefore think it best to decline to undertake any decision in the matter. Paper Number: 11737/1849. Poor Law Union Number 407. Counties: Hampshire.
