Description
Content
Folio 195. Letter from William Bolton Girdlestone, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation, to the Poor Law Board, requesting advice under the following circumstances. Under the Local Act 13 Geo III c 50 by which the parishes were incorporated the churchwardens and overseers are directed to elect four guardians for the parish of All Saints, on Easter Tuesday in every year, and then return the names of the gentlemen so elected, to the board of guardians. On Easter Tuesday last they proceeded with the election, but, from some dispute as to the manner of making the election, eight people have been returned to the board as the elected guardians; four being returned by the two overseers, and four being returned by the two churchwardens. At a meeting of the board of guardians on 16 April the eight men presented themselves and insisted on taking the oath of qualification and insisted on sitting at the board, and voting on the resolutions. The chairman asks under these circumstances whether clause 8 of the Act of 5& 6 Vic c 57 applies to the difficulty in which they are placed. Paper Number: 11737/1849. Poor Law Union Number 407. Counties: Hampshire.
