- Folio 187. Letter from William Bolton Girdlestone, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation, to Poor Law Board, in reply to his letter of 16 February 1849 Girdlestone informs them that 'nearly the whole of the casual relief is given by the Board without any intervention of the Relieving Officer'. His relief is paid at the board and account is taken of the amount and nature of the relief given in a book kept by the clerk. The totals of each board are carried into the relieving officer account for the week. Paper Number: 5540/1849. Poor Law Union Number 407. Counties: Hampshire.
