Folios 716-719. Letter from J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board referring to the Board's letter dated 13 October 1853 regarding the appointment of Henry Stevens as schoolmaster at the workhouse. A copy of the minute dated 23 September 1853 is provided together with the completed appointment form for Stevens. Also advise that the post was not advertised. Minute of the guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union dated 23 September 1853 stating that a letter had been received from Mr Henry Stevens, of Westminster applying for the situation of schoolmaster at the workhouse. Resolved that the board will accept him on trial for two months at a salary of £25 per annum with rations. The form shows Stevens of Training Institution, Manchester Buildings, Westminster had been a schoolmaster there. The salary to be £25 per annum. The post became vacant after the dismissal of Charles Harris. Annotated: Best to proceed as suggested as unsure of his fitness for the job. Paper Number: 36117/1853 37066/1853. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
