- Folios 712-714. Letter from J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board replying to their letter dated 13 October 1853 concerning Mr King's [James King] bond. The guardians did not approve of the sureties named by him and enclose copies of the minutes of the meetings dated 8 July 1853, 22 July 1853 and 30 September 1853 relating to the subject. Copy of minute dated 8 July 1853 stating that the bond could not be found at the magistrates' clerk's office and King had agreed to give a new bond naming the following as his sureties: George Steeds, edge tool maker of Gurney Slade and Richard Steeds, edge tool maker of Oakhill. However it was minuted that the guardians had requested King to name two new sureties as they did not approve of the Steeds. Copy of minute dated 22 July 1853 stating that King, assistant overseer of Compton Martin be informed 'that the Guardians decline to give any reason why they object to Messrs Steed'. Copy of minute dated 30 September 1853 noting that a bond dated 25 May 1852 naming the Steeds as King's sureties was the one lost as referred to in the minute of 8 July 1853. Moved by the Reverend H Milward and seconded by W King that the bond should not accepted. An amendment, moved by [Mr Feerbrache] and seconded by Mr Press, that the matter be postponed until the next meeting and communication be made with the churchwardens and overseers of Compton Martin asking if they were satisfied with King's sureties, was lost. Annotated: copy of resolution to be forwarded to King. Paper Number: 35978/1853 37056/1853. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
