Description
Content
Folios 249-250. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to J Rees-Mogg [John Rees-Mogg] and W Res-Mogg [William Rees-Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians, Clutton Union, Cholwell, Temple Cloud, Bristol referring to Mr Gulson's [Edward Gulson, Poor Law Inspector, Exmouth] unsatisfactory report on the workhouse which had stated that the master had tried in part to exonerate himself by saying that the use of the buildings for purposes other than Poor Law, such as Petty Sessions, County Court sittings and tax meetings, caused great disturbance and inconvenience, particularly for the porter. Although the Poor Law Commissioners had given approval, in a letter of 4 February 1847, for County Court sittings to be held there on the understanding that they would be removed if found to be inconvenient, the Poor Law Board now consider it expedient that they find other accommodation as soon as is practicable. Paper Number: 25065/1849. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
