Description
Content
Folios 246-248. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to J Rees-Mogg [John Rees-Mogg] and W Rees-Mogg [William Rees-Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians, Clutton Union, Cholwell, Temple Cloud, Bristol, forwarding to them extracts from the report of Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson], Poor Law Inspector, on unsatisfactory conditions in the workhouse. It quotes sections about the inability of the master to keep accounts, and their inaccuracy, food hidden away by paupers in privies and rubbish dumps, lack of cleanliness, foul privies, overcrowded children's dormitories, which the schoolmistress had tried unavailingly to protest about, an open cesspool and bad drains, a 'state dangerous to the health of the inmates'. He recommends that the master and matron be asked to submit their resignations, to allow the Board to find suitable replacements before winter, and that the water supply should be improved either by pipes or by sinking a new well. Annotated: this letter has been seen and approved by Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson]. Paper Number: 25065/1849. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
