Description
Content
Folio 245. Letter from [Edward Gulson], Poor Law Inspector, Exmouth, to the Poor Law Board commenting on the additional information supplied by them about the use of Clutton Union workhouse for frequent meetings for purposes other than to do with the workhouse, following his unsatisfactory report on its state. He states that reluctant approval had originally been given on the understanding that if it were found to be inconvenient a move would be made to nearby suitable accommodation. The master is using the situation to excuse problems; the porter, a shoemaker who teaches some boys, is too busy with visitors on such days, with the paupers employed to look after their horses. Annotated: prepare a letter referring to this and the previous report. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
