Description
Content
Folios 342-343. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to W E Goodacre junior, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, referring to the letter from Joseph Alvery and other inhabitants of the parish on Sutton in Ashfield in the Mansfield Union, asking the Commissioners to make enquiries into the mode of treatment of the poor of the third district by Valantine, Medical Officer. The Commissioners have received a report on the investigation made by Robert Weale, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner. Valantine is charged with neglect in the following cases: Sarah Witham, wife of James Witham, who died on 29 January 1842; Mary Preece who died 20 March 1842; John Wilkinson, who is now ill. On the 26 January 1842 Valantine received an order to attend Sarah Witham, whereupon he visited and administered medicine. One the 28 January 1842 Valantine received a message saying Mrs Witham pains had increased, but he was unable to attend. She died the next day. The Commissioners desire to observe that they think Valantine ought to have attended on the 28 January, but if he was unable to he ought to have provided a substitute. The Commissioners wish to know if an application was made to the relieving officer, on behalf of Sarah Witham, for broth, brandy and water which were recommended on the 27 and 29 January 1842. In the cases of Mary Preece and John Wilkinson the Commissioners see no reason to attach blame in either case to Mr Valantine. Paper Number: 9651/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
