Description
Content
Folios 311-312. Letter from William Espin, Auditor, Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, replying to their letter dated 2 July 1842, 8545/B/1842, regarding arrears of balance claimed by the overseers of Sutton in Ashfield quitting office March 1841. Claim of £9 4s 11d was disallowed on these grounds. The overseers on closing their accounts presented a claim of excused rates and unoccupied houses to a considerable amount. Espin assumes that they actually had in hand the full balance of £24 4s 11d or that the amount could be guaranteed. It may have been that if the overseers had adopted a proper course of action the rates may have been collected. Although given the state of the area what may have been able to be collected one week would not necessarily be collected the following week. If there were extenuating circumstances Espin, on the instruction of the Commissioners, will allow either all of the £9 4s 11d or part of it. Annotation: G Coode 6 July 1842. [George Coode, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Paper Number: 9027/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
