Description
Content
Folios 308-309. Letter from Charles Neale, Mansfield Woodhouse, [Agent for the Duke of Portland], to the Poor Law Commission, headed Mansfield Woodhouse National School. Referring to a letter from the Commissioners dated 3 June 1842 6577/B/1842, 7005/B/1842. Shown to Mr Neale by Edward Coke. In the letter the Commissioners propose to allow the sum of £250 to be appropriated out of the sale of parish property towards the creation of a national school and master's house. The trustees and friends of the school would accept but, a faction of the inhabitants, amongst whom there are two churchwardens and guardians of the poor oppose this unless the same time £250 can be permitted from the same fund (which they believe to be £1100) towards procuring additional burial ground. The friends of the school admit to preferring the enlargement of the burial ground as it is painful to witness its improper state. Also due to the depressed condition of the trade of the place it would give employment to a large number of the unemployed in preparing the ground and walls of the enlarged burial ground. There is no chance of the money being had from the church rate or the trustees of the Claypits Land. The trustees are already in debt for repairs done to the church many years ago. A sum of £100 is justly due to the parish, the sum having being left by an individual some years ago and loaned by the parish to enlarge the old workhouse. This work was not done and the property was sold. Charles Neale believes the Commission already knows that the Duke of Portland purchased land for the school and has granted a lease for ninety nine years at a nominal charge. Annotation: William Golden Lumley 2 July 1842. Paper Number: 8874/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
