Description
Content
Folio 307. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Parsons and Benn of Mansfield. The Commission acknowledges receipt of Parsons and Benn's letter of 1 July 1842. Referring to 2& 3 Vic c 84, they express some doubt whether the liability of an overseer who was in office when the contribution was made continues under that act when he ceases to be in office. They point out that the Act makes it lawful for two justices [Justices of the Peace] to summons the overseers, and they take this to mean the overseers in office at the time when the contribution is required. The Commission are of opinion that the overseers (including churchwardens) liable to be summoned under 2& 3 Vic c 54 are the overseers in office at the time of the summons being issued. Paper Number: 8873/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
