Description
Content
Folios 125-126. Letter from E Jones, 6 Ryder Street, Saint James, [London] Overseer of the Parish of Birchanger, to the Poor Law Commission, informing them that the overseers and farmers have for years employed surplus labourers on their farms, paying what was agreed among themselves while the remainder was charged to the poor rate. Jones has now stopped this system, and as a result, the farmers are opposed to him, denying him access to their land and the gravel pit, and the paupers will soon all be unemployed. He asks the Commission how he can resolve the matter. Annotated: to be given to Mr Power. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
