Description
Content
Folios 122-123. Letter from J A Summers, R F Patmore, William Taylor, William Palmer, Parish Officers of Bishops Stortford, to the Poor Law Commission, replying to a letter of 3 February 1835. They comment that uniting parishes to Bishops Stortford is not acceptable when 60-70 paupers are now in the workhouse. It is considered appropriate that the cost of maintenance be reduced to about 1s per head per week. The paupers currently make sacks, ropes and cord, which meets local demand but sales might not increase to take up a greater output. Although money has been spent on the purchase of land and erection of buildings it is not enough for a further twenty parishes. They are well aware of the deficiencies of the old system, and are confident that if the Commission allow the management of the present workhouse to continue, the advantages of the new plan can be realised. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
