Description
Content
Folios 53-55. Petition from the proprietors, occupiers and tenants in the parish of Sawbridgeworth to the Poor Law Commission, informing them of their wish not to unite with Bishops Stortford, Thorley and others for workhouse purposes. The parish is entirely agricultural and recent additions to the workhouse afford more accommodation for the poor. Good management has always been achieved except in the winter when the able bodied labourers, who have spent their summer wages, expect the workhouse to provide work or relief. By allotting land and finding work, arson and rioting have been avoided, and the parish would prefer to manage the new laws. They are concerned that the Sawbridgeworth workhouse will become redundant, whilst at the same time the parish is paying a levy to meet the expense of building the workhouse in Bishops Stortford. Signed by: Rose Milles, Rowland Alston, Rowland Gardiner, Thomas N Williams, George Proctor, Thomas Hutchins, Robert Plumer Ward, Charles Chapman, Richard Patmore, W Sharp, Wiliam Wilson, John Clarke, William Barnard, Thomas Barry, Parris, the mark of Orgar, Goldsmith, Richard C Thompson, William Avis, James Garritt, James Speller, James Patmore, Joseph Harding, H Unwin, Richard Harris, William Bennett, George Billings, John Turner, the mark of Joseph Fawsit, John Brickwell, William Sharp, John Bacon, Joseph Silcock, Charles Littlechild, Edward Parsons, Henry Charrington, Samuel Nash, George Bacon, John Morris, William Page, John Burford, Sophia Milles, Thomas Wright, Thomas Cole, Thomas Chapenaus.
