- Folios 50-52. Letter from H G Ward, Hadham Lordship, Bishops Stortford, to the Poor Law Commission, reporting that he has established that the parishes are very distressed by their poor and they welcome a trial of the new workhouse system that may ease the current problems. He welcomed a visit by an assistant Commissioner. He says that the offer of manual labour is effective in causing people to find work elsewhere. There had been arson at Westmill and at Standon where evidence was gathered against two men. Concern is expressed that winter will bring much hardship and Ward would like to know details of the district plan. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
