Description
Content
Folios 35-36. Letter from H G Ward, Hadham Lordship, to the Poor Law Commission stating that the best way he can inform the Commissioners of the feelings of the parish is to forward the resolutions [not included] which were passed at a vestry meeting, and he will do his best to enforce them. However winter is the worst season for putting the workhouse into strict operation. Ward regrets they have to retain the parish farm for the time being and that he cannot put the parish to the expense of enlarging the workhouse until it is known whether there is to be a union with other parishes. The parish will confine itself to increase accommodation, and strict enforcement of discipline. A very steady man has been appointed as workhouse master. When we have more information on the parochial union we will be able to take further steps. Annotated: expressing satisfaction with the contents. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
