Folio 16: surgeon's noted that the following two cases were recently arrived from England and was in the ship for three days when they were attacked and sent to hospital whence they were not returned when the ship left Rio De Janeiro, in which the surgeon believed they were very severe.

Folio 16: case no 210, Mr George Richards, aged 37, Master; sick or hurt, febris biliosa, according to the surgeon that the patient had a slight attack of fever and became much frightened, nervous and irritable, the surgeon also stated that the patient would have died from fright had he not been sent to the mountains, where change of climate and scene speedily restored him to health; put on sick list 30 May 1856, sent 1 June 1856 to Hospital, returned 8 June 1856.
Folios 16-17: case no 214, John Sole, aged 34, Surgeon; sick or hurt, debilitas (exhaustio), this was the surgeon own case, was one of utter prostration, consequent on long continued physical exertion and mental anxiety, having been at sea more than 3 weeks without rest night or day; put on sick list 1 June 1856, sent 1 June 1856 to Hospital, returned 1 July 1856.
Folio 17: case no 218, Richard Giles, aged 29, Boatswain's Mate; sick or hurt, contusio, severe injuried of the foot and great toe, caused by accident when cleaning the ship; put on sick list 5 June 1856, discharged 18 July 1856 to duty.
Folio 17: case no 234, Henry [Boys?], aged 36, Commander; sick or hurt, febris biliosa, a slight attacked of fever, he went at once to the Madagascar and placed himself under the care of B[enjamin] Bynoe, surgeon of that ship, according to the surgeon he saw him in the mountain where they were both sent for changed of climate, and he stated that this patient was considerably shaken; put on sick list 14 June 1856, discharged 14 June 1856 to the Madagascar, returned 30 June 1856.

Folio 17: case no 258, Richard Hoare, aged 33, Carpenter's Mate; sick or hurt, vulnus, while trimming a spar with an axe - it slipped and made a wound of about 4 inches on the face of the tibia; put on sick list 28 July 1856, discharged 7 August 1856 to duty.
Folio 17: case no 274, John [Handevele?], aged 37, Quarter Master; sick or hurt, contusio, a severe contusion of the hand caused by a jammed in a block; put on sick list 3 September 1856, discharged 20 September 1856 paid off.

Folios 21-24: Surgeon's general remarks, that the surgical practice during the past year was very trifling being only one operation required to remove a toe from John West (case no 82). Three surgical cases was invalided:- Thomas Jackson (case no 2), James Ratcliffe (case no 20), George Cole (case no 38). The practice of medicine was far more serious according to the surgeon, in the first half of the year 4 cases were invalided:- William Felthouse, samuel Caws (case no 21), George Short (case no 83), Benjamin Cheverton (case no 85). Referred to 5 December 1855 the surgeon stated was the time when cholera was prevalent in the Northern Provinces of Brazil, in both Asiatic or non Biliosa and sporadic (English) or Biliosa, several men were attacked with severe cramps in the bowels, cold clammy skin, vomiting and purging large quantities of Bilious matter. The surgeon describes nature of that fever, in which at first instance it presented no alarming features, but shortly afterwards it swept off sixth of the ship compliment. The surgeon mentioned the first of a series of cases of the fever that possessed a much more formidable appearance, in which he stated the case no 143 [John West] as a fair type of the history and treatment of about 30 cases which occurred in the month of May.
