Description
Content
Folios 391-392. Letter from John Parsons, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, enclosing the Minutes of the special meeting of the Basford guardians at which he was appointed, and seeking the sanction of the Commission for this appointment. Parsons complains bitterly at the failure of Mr Ashton to assist him in settling into the post unless asked to do so by the Commission. He hopes Ashton will get his accounts passed at the forthcoming audit, as these need to be taken off his (Parsons') hands. He has done his best with the minutes and will try to get the figures from the relieving officers but 'I beg of you not to turn them against me in my first week. I assure you I shall have trouble enough without that'. In a postscript he adds, 'I have neither envelopes, post/stamps or wax.' The letter also contains a return for their approval giving details of outdoor relief given to the following able-bodied unemployed and their families as follows: Samuel Moore, [Framework Knitter]. Thomas Peel, [Framework Knitter]. Samuel Leaper, Labourer. Annotated: send the forms, send also the circular as to correspondence, refer the able-bodied cases to [Robert Weale, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]. The cases are sanctioned. Weale considers on 17 July that Mr Ashton should be responsible for the accounts up to the time of his resignation, which was after the quarter day, and by 20 July has been to Basford and seen Ashton, who will do what is required of him. Paper Number: 9353/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
