Description
Content
Folios 357-358. Letter from [John Brown], Guardian of the Basford Poor Law Union to the Poor Law Commission regarding a loan of £2,000 for the alteration and enlargement of the workhouse. Following a special meeting of the guardians on 14 June and in reply to the Commissioners' letter of 18 June (8157/B/1842), he states that the instructions in their letter of 8 August 1840 have been followed. However, at the time of passing the plans, it had not been realised by the board that the law now limited repayment of loans under one third of the average [expenditure] to ten years. The board had expected that a 20-year loan would be available from the Exchequer Bill Loan Commissioners. Brown acknowledges the strenuous efforts made by 'the able and excellent' Robert Weale [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], who did well to force through the decision, and fears that if another special meeting has to be called, the guardians will refuse to pass an amendment. He therefore requests the Commissioners to use their influence with the Exchequer Bill Loan Commission to allow the loan as it stands in view of the great local distress and the need to conciliate the members of the board who are in opposition to the plans. He also asks that the Commissioners reply to him personally in the absence of a clerk. Annotated: immediate. Paper Number: 8454/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
