Description
Content
Folios 343-344. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, informing him that they have considered the report of Robert Weale, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, on the enquiry into the conduct of Mr Riley [John Riley, Auditor for the Basford Poor Law Union]. The enquiry concerned the payment, from union funds, of legal expenses incurred by three of the guardians in the law suit Nixon [Thomas Nixon, Magistrate] versus Bailey [Thomas Bailey] and Others [Farrand and Wood]. They consider that it should be determined whether Riley took so active a part in the discussion as to how these expenses should be paid, as a guardian, that he allowed it to affect his judgement as an auditor. Having considered depositions from five guardians who swear that Riley advocated paying the expenses from union funds, and another four who are equally sure that he was in favour of raising a private subscription, they can only conclude that the case against Riley is not proved. Paper Number: 8160/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
