Folio 24: Henry Faregrave, aged 32, Private Marine; disease or hurt, ulcer. Put on sick list, 28 October 1870, at Yokohama. Sent to the Sick Quarters at Yokohama, 3 November 1870.
Folios 25 – 26: James Ward, aged 33, Captain of the Forecastle; disease or hurt, secondary syphilis. Put on sick list, 7 November 1870. Sent to the Sick Quarters at Yokohama, 8 November 1870. He had been treated twice in the previous months.
Folio 26: George Green, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 28 October 1870, at Yokohama. Sent to the Sick Quarters at Yokohama, 8 November 1870.
Folio 27: Alexander McLean, aged 17, Boy; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 5 November 1870, at Yokohama. Sent to the Sick Quarters at Yokohama, 8 November 1870.
Folios 27 – 29: Frederick Ferris, aged 35, Stoker; disease or hurt, heat apoplexy. Put on sick list, 26 May 1870. Discharged, 31 May 1870. He wished to return to his duty in the stokehole as soon as possible in spite of the temperature being as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Folios 29 – 30: Edwin Bate, aged 32, Ship’s Steward; disease or hurt, partial paralysis (extensors). Put on sick list, 26 June 1870, at Yokohama. Discharged, 30 June 1870, to light duty. Complained of inability to use his left arm.
Folios 30 – 32: Henry Ward, aged 25, Private Marine; disease or hurt, primary syphilis. Put on sick list, 26 July 1870. Discharged, 13 November 1870.
Folios 32 – 33: Mr J Pearce, aged 32, Gunner; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 25 May 1870. He appeared on the sick list a number of times for the same complaint and had a period in hospital on Ascension Island.

Folio 35: Table II, A list of men who have received wounds or hurts. James Cook, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman, certificate granted 25 January 1871, fracture of base of skull on 26 October 1870 at Yokohama.

Folios 38 – 77: Surgeon’s general remarks.
Folios 38 to 41 describe the ship and her crew, ‘undersized and unhealthy looking’, and discuss the ventilation in some detail. There is a description of the sick bay on folio 40 and folio 41 discusses the hygiene of the ship.
Folios 41 to 42 discuss diseases at Hong Kong, the water supply and climate.
Folios 42 – 52 describe the visit to Japan, calling at Nagasaki and Kobe on the way to Yokohama; the lack of hygiene; prostitution and the act for the prevention of contagious diseases; the healthiness of Yokohama, in spite of the lack of sanitation; the common diseases and their treatment; ‘shampooing’ and the blind masseurs; the very poor left to die by the roadside; observations on the Japanese people; geology.
Folios 52 to 77 discuss the diseases which occurred in some detail and with reference to individual cases; folios 68 to 77 discuss diarrhoea and at folios 70 to 71 is copied a letter from the surgeon to the Captain, which was forwarded to the Admiral, regarding the poor quality of the water at Hong Kong.
Folios 79 – 83: Alphabetical Sick List.
