Folios 22A – 44: Surgeon’s general remarks. Comments on the high level of sickness in the Perseus and low level of invaliding, referring to Table No 10. The low levels of invaliding and the single death can be mainly attributed to sick men being sent to the hospital early. Discusses the 307 cases during the year, as shown on Table III, and considers the different types of disease, with reference to Table No 11, Shewing the relative amount of sickness in proportion to the number of cases in each class of disease, on folio 23. Folios 23 and 24 relate the occurrences of the different diseases to the month and temperature, as illustrated by Table No 12, Shewing the number of cases of each disease which occurred in each month, with the temperature and locality of the ship at the periods, folio 23. Folios 25 to 33 discuss the various diseases in nosological order, folios 25 to 29 covering fevers with a lengthy discussion of remittent fever, treated by the method recommended by Dr W C McLean in Reynold’s Medicine. Folios 29 to 33 discuss diseases of the stomach and bowels and folios 33 to 37 relate fevers and diseases of the stomach and bowels to the movements of the ship. From 10 March to 13 May 1867 the ship was engaged ‘on a special mission to Manilla and the Pelew Islands’ [Palau] and at folio 33 is a list of officers and men landed at the Pelew Islands, they were ashore for 5 days. The Pelew Islands are described briefly. Folios 36 and 37 discusses the relationship between fever and diseases of the bowels. Folio 37 discusses diseases of the brain and nerves, insolatio and cephalalgia. Folios 38 to 39 discuss diseases of the respiratory organs; pneumonia, phthisis and catarrh. Folios 39 to 40 discuss diseases of the heart and blood vessels; morbus cordis, palpitation of the heart, haemorrhoids and varix. Folios 40 to 42 cover diseases of the kidneys, bladder and genitals; irritable bladder, syphilis, primary and secondary, gonorrhoea, orchitis and cordylomata. Folio 42 discusses diseases of the joints; rheumatism, bursitis, debility and exhaustion. Folios 42 to 44 discuss disease of the special senses; lachrymal abscess and opthalmia; and diseases of the skin, glands etc; bubo sympathetic, abscess, ulcer, boils, rupia, erythema; and wounds, accidents etc.
