Description
Content
Folios 443-444. Letter from J Riley, Auditor, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding his quarterly accounts of the Basford Poor Law Union. He notes the continuing unsatisfactory state of the Treasurers accounts. The Schedules are also in an unfinished states as regards the 'Sick Out Poor'. Several of the surgeons have not sent in any accounts. The guardians have appointed to the medical district of Arnold someone who was a little while ago discharged for 'very culpable conduct'. This is Gelsthorpe who he says was 'brought up in a cotton mill', and practiced as a law doctor. 'Poverty is a hardship, added to sickness is truly distressing, to have only the aid of a person so brought up, is disgraceful to the Board that appoints him'. Riley believes the low salary offered to be the problem. George Chamberlain, lately discharged Assistant Overseer for Bulwell brought Riley the Commissioners letter sanctioning his reappointment but Riley states he has been 'as inefficient as ever'. He states that trade in the union is low but sufficient employment. Annotated: Mr Senior [Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], for observations. Paper Number: 7835/B/1841. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
