Folios 330-334. Letter from R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, sending particulars of the appointment of William Nichols and his wife Mary as master and matron of the Probus Workhouse. Nichols, a resident of Truro, was formerly a mason, and has two dependent children, aged 17 and 20. His sureties are George Hall, mason, of Truro, and Jacob Corin Edwards, ironmonger, of Truro. Mary Nicholls was formerly a milliner. The joint salaries are to be £30 a year plus double rations plus coal and candles. The appointments are consequent upon the resignation the former master, Thomas Mannell, and his wife, who have been elected master and matron of the St Austell Poor Law Union Workhouse. Annotated: sanction stating that neither of the children stated to be dependent upon them will be allowed to reside in or to frequent the workhouse. Paper Number: 23291/1848.
