Description
Content
Folios 320-321. Letter from Richard Chapman, Assistant Clerk, on behalf of R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, stating that the number of inmates in Probus Workhouse exceeds by 4 the number fixed, but the guardians have directed that a family be removed to bring it within the limited number. The number of inmates at St Clement Workhouse is 147 and would have been reduced if some families had not had to be retained to allow 'the itch' to be treated. Some alterations are being made at St Clement Workhouse to improve conditions and ventilation. Annotated: acknowledge and state that the numbers should not be allowed to exceed the limit prescribed. Further annotated: an investigation is in progress upon which the workhouse question in the Truro union greatly depends. The chairman has lost his father and in consequence of family engagements and absence has requested him [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] to postpone the matter till September. Paper Number: 20670/1848. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
