Content
Folios 197-203. A handwritten list of comments upon the expenses submitted for the parishes in the Basford Poor Law Union. The writer notes that the price of butter is stated to be 1s 7d per pound. He also notes that the average price of best butter in Nottingham market has been 1s 2d per pound, with 'good Salt Butter at 10d', so he suggests that 1s 7d is an enormous price, to which attention should be drawn He notes that the salaries being paid to the assistant overseers must not be allowed after the 25 March 1837, and emphasises that 'after Lady Day at latest - no Salaries will be allowed except to the Union Officers'. Regarding Arnold Parish, the writer feels that £2 6s 4d is far too much to pay for the rent of the pay room for one quarter, and that 1s per week would be ample He notes that in Wollaton and other parishes sums are charged for 'Clothing of apprentices'. He asks that they be checked as they are given by the overseers and allowed by the guardians. He feels that this is 'relief in aid of Wages' and wants it discouraged before it becomes 'a growing evil in this Union'. Commenting on the item 'Attending revising Barristers', he states that this is compulsory by the Act and that no payment should be allowed. An item for the parish of Lambley is 'Fee farm Rent to the King'. The writer does not know what this is for, but argues it cannot be paid out of the poor rate as it is not for any parish property. Likewise in Bridgeford the item 'Premium with J. Fowler 7£' he says cannot be allowed in future. He adds 'The independent labourer cannot raise 7£ to pay with his Son - why should the pauper?' Again he feels it is relief in aid of wages. The parish of Basford has charged £8 7s 9½d for stationery and letters for one quarter; the writer says this is an enormous charge and adds 'in this Union the Overseers expend money in one thing - and charge it as another - Please state that the Bills will be requested in future - and such sums cannot be allowed'. Again he states that the salaries of the assistant overseers are 'of great amount' and must be disallowed after 25 March 1837 at the latest. There follows the list of expenses for the following places: Colwich, Wilford, Bridgeford, Carlton, Codnor, Hucknall, Lambley, Bilbro [Bilborough], Strelley, Codnor Park, Arnold, Wollaton, Papplewick, Greasley, Kirkby, Ilkeston, Bulwell. Ruddington, Gotham, Bunny, Bradmore, Basford, Newstead, Nuthall, Shiply [Shipley], Selston and Heanor. Annotated: for the information of Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]. Paper Number: 659/C/1837. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
