Folios 194-195. Letter from William Ashton, [Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union], to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Ashton states that the meetings of the guardians held on 27 December 1836, 3 January 1837, 10 January 1837, 17 January 1837 and 24 January 1837 have been unimportant, but he reports the amount of out relief ordered at each meeting. 27 December 1836, present Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, V Chair [Vice Chairman], and the guardians of Papplewick and Basford. Out relief £83 6s 1d 'the weather inclement'. 3 January 1837, present Henry Smith, the guardians of Wollaton, Arnold, Basford, Hucknall, Kirkby. Out relief £86 18s 3d. 10 January 1837, present Henry Smith, George Farrand, the guardians of Ilkeston, Arnold, Colwick, Calverton, Woodborough, Carlton and Papplewick. Out relief £88 6s 1d. 17 January 1837, present Henry Smith, the guardians of Basford, Arnold, Lambley, Wollaton, Papplewick. Out relief £89 11s 0d. 24 January 1837, present Henry Smith, George Farrand, the guardians of Wollaton, Carlton, Beeston, Papplewick, Selston, Eastwood and Arnold. Out relief £91 11s 0d. Ashton presents forms No 11 and 12 with the items of other expenses for the second quarter, and states that some bastardy cases have been relieved, but 'they are wholly discontinued'. He requests 'a sealed order of April 18th for the use of the Board' and adds 'I have to acknowledge the receipt of the Second Report will be carefully preserved'. Annotated: first to send the order requested, second that they have no copies and the clerk has been informed. Paper Number: 641/C/1837. Poor Law Union Number 334.
