Description
Content
Folio 185. Letter from William Ashton, [Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union], to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Ashton reports on a special meeting held at Basford Workhouse 6 December 1836. Present were Henry Smith, Chairman, George Farrand, V Chair [Vice Chairman,] and the guardians of Arnold, Beeston, Gedling, Gamson [Gamston], Papplewick, Newstead, Hucknall, Shipley, Bilbro [Bilborough], Heanor, Greasley, Bunny, Carlton, Ilkestone [Ilkeston], Bulwell, Eastwood, Basford, Wollaton, Ruddington, Barton, Bradmore, Selstone [Selston], Woodbro [Woodborough] Calverton and Thrumpton. Ashton says the minutes of the last meeting were read. Alfred Pogson, Relieving Officer, No 1 District, had sent a letter applying for a salary of £150 per annum 'to enable him to perform better the duties of his district'. This was unanimously refused after a short consultation. The relieving officers' books were examined and out-relief ordered to the amount of £85 19s for the ensuing week. Ashton says he is sending a list of other expenses, and he asks whether these should be sent quarterly. Finally, he asks whether a pauper can demand to receive relief in the Workhouse, when the board of guardians have offered out relief. Annotated: Refer to note by Mr Nicholls [George Nicholls, Poor Law Commissioner] on the last question, and the memorandum by Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] concerning other expenses. Paper Number: 5035/C/1836. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
