- Folio 184. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to the Basford Poor Law Union. They acknowledge the receipt of a list explaining expenses charged by individual parishes. They observe that the charges for out relief will not appear in the overseers accounts in future, and as all relief is now vested in the board of guardians, the Commissioners presume that these charges were incurred before the union was fully in operation. They state that the salaries of the assistant overseers are also irregular and must cease. They point out that items such as incidental expenses (or necessary expenses cannot be allowed in Union accounts, as 'every shilling of expenditure must be fully explained and accounted for'. Finally, in response to an enquiry as to whether this information must be submitted every quarter, the Commissioners state that 'they always will be so desired when there are any charges requiring such explanation'. Paper Number: 5052/C/1836. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
