Folios 167-168. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], reporting on the meeting of the Guardians at the Basford workhouse. Present were: Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, Vice Chairman; Guardians from Basford, Papplewick, Lambley, Hucknall, Kirkby, Calverton, Ruddington and Greasley. Proposed by Mr Kimpson and seconded by Mr Shaw that the writings of the Basford workhouse to be kept by Smith. Bills examined and allowed. Relieving Officers books examined. Out relief sum established. Pauper's cases heard. Provisions ordered. Ashton acknowledges receipt of their letter requesting details of the 'other expenses' incurred by all the parishes. The Quarterly abstracts of receipts and payments of each parish have been given to the overseers to lay before their vestries. He asks the Commission if they want copies of the above or samples from a few parishes. Annotated: Mr Nicholls, [George Nicholls, Commissioner]. Annotated: Acknowledge. State that the Commission wish to receive a particular account of the items of 'other expenses.' Refer to Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] for his information.
