Folios 156-157. Letter from Mark Milnes, Assistant Overseer, Basford to the Poor Law Commission asking advice about a bill sent to the overseers, by Mr Watts, Nottingham Surgeon, in respect of attending an inquest on a William Renshaw. He says he is enclosing the Coroner's order [not enclosed]. Watts is threatening to have the overseers arrested if the bill is not paid promptly. Annotated: Mr Nicholls, [George Nicholls, Poor Law Commissioner]. Annotated: [Mr Coode [George Coode]. JL [John George Shaw Lefevre, Poor Law Commissioner]. Annotated: The overseers cannot refuse to pay the fee to the medical witness, the payment of which has been ordered by the Coroner. By the Act of [last] Sessions, 6& 7 William 4 c 89 the Coroner is empowered to order the payment enumeration to a Medical [Practitioner] for his attendance at an Inquest out of the Poor Rate, according to a table of fees prescribed by the Act.
