- Folios 153-154. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], reporting on the meeting of the Guardians. Present were: Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, Vice Chairman; Guardians from Basford, Hucknall, Selston, Cossall, Arnold, Gotham, Wollaton, Clifton, Kirkby, Newstead, Ilkestone [Ilkeston] [Derbyshire], Bulwell, Nuthall and Strelley. Resolutions: Proposed by Mr Chouler and seconded by Mr Carlin regarding a medical man's attendance at a woman's delivery. An advertisement to be inserted in the Nottingham newspapers for a supplier of groceries to the workhouse and bread and coffins to the parishes. Reverend S Banks to visit the sick poor once a week. Mr Brown and Chouler to supervise alterations, including the waiting room, in the workhouse. Bills examined and allowed. Relieving Officers books examined. Out relief sum established. Provisions ordered. Ashton declined the additional job of Superintendent Registrar. Annotated: Mr Nicholls, [George Nicholls, Commissioner]. Annotated: Acknowledge. Gulson for his information.
