Folios 149-150. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], giving the resolutions passed at the meeting of the board of guardians. Present were: Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, Vice Chairman; Guardians from Basford, Arnold, Carlton, Stoke [Stoke Bardolph], Beeston, Newstead and Annesley. Resolutions: Proposed by Mr Brown and seconded by Mr Gill that the Basford workhouse premises and stock be insured in the Manchester and County Insurance offices. Ashton to ascertain the terms of the insurance. That the clerk of the [peace] be informed of the death of Joseph Staley and be requested to defray the maintenance and funeral expenses for Staley. The clerk to send a letter to the overseers of each parish. Letter states that the overseers are to collect weekly sums from the fathers of illegitimate children for their maintenance. If they don't the Board will proceed against them. Relieving Officers books examined and out relief ordered. Hucknall and Bulwell applied for the sanction of the board. Bills, funeral expenses, clothing and premium for apprenticeship allowed. Goods ordered and pauper cases coming before the Board. Ashton acknowledges receipt of Dietary issued under seal. Annotated: Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], for his information. Annotated: Thanks Gulson. Nil. Paper Number: 3602/C/1836. Poor Law Union Number 334.
