Folios 135-136. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], reporting on the meeting of the Guardians at the Basford workhouse. Present Edward Gulson, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]; Henry Smith, Chairman. Guardians present from Basford, Arnold, Papplewick, Gedling, Lambley, Carlton, Beeston, Wollaton, Hucknall, Bulwell, Barton, Greasley, Gamson [Gamston], Ilkestone [Derbyshire], Newstead, Eastwood, Ruddington, Bilborough and Nuthall. Motions were proposed by the following: Mr Riley, Mr Brown, Gulson and seconded by Mr Toule, Riley and Mr Kempson respectively for the following resolutions. The clerk to reply to Mr Nixon, Chairman's resignation letter inviting him to meetings as an ex-officia Guardian. That Smith be the Chairman; Amendment proposed by Mr Cheetham and seconded by Mr Pogson that Mr Farrand be appointed Chairman. Amendment withdrawn and Smith appointed Chairman and Farrand as Vice Chairman. Second report from Ashton to Chadwick reporting on the meeting of the Guardians at the Basford workhouse. Smith, Chairman. Resolutions: That Ashton ascertains from the parishes of the old Incorporation, the sums secured upon the Poor Rates for the building of Basford Associated Poor House. That a resolution be rescinded and new directives drawn up for the relief of mothers and their bastard children in relation to the Poor Law Amendment Act. Bills examined and allowed. Relieving Officers books examined. Out relief sum established. Pauper's cases heard. Annotated: Acknowledge. JL [John George Shaw Lefevre, Commissioner]. Paper Number: 3280/C/1836.
