- Folios 188-189. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission regarding complaint of Mr Jolliffe, Medical Officer. Mr Graves [John T Graves], Assistant Poor Law Commissioner has attended enquiry which lasted three days. Nine witnesses attended. They were three Yeomen; the late Relieving Officer, Mr Williamson, Gentleman; the Assistant Overseer of the Poor of the parish of Chardstock and four paupers, two men and two women. Jolliffe was examined on Oath and his brother, Mr Jolliffe, Solicitor acted for Jolliffe. Requests advice on allowance for the witnesses and should payment come from poor rate of Chardstock or from Union. Suggested allowances are Yeomen, 7s 6d per day; Mr Williamson, late Relieving Officer, 10s per day; Assistant Overseer, 5s per day; Paupers, 2s 6d per day. Are Jolliffe and his brother allowed to claim any attendance allowance? Is the Clerk allowed to make any claim? Several witnesses live within 10 miles of Axminster. Annotation - States that Graves has sent a copy of his report and attached statement of witnesses and descriptions to Charles Bond, Clerk to Axminster Poor Law Union.
