Folios 168-169. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission. Letter regarding complaint of Mr Jolliffe, Medical Officer. Following Mr Chadwick's [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] of 30 April 1846, Mr Graves, [John Thomas Graves] Assistant Poor Law Commissioner has been instructed to enquire into Jolliffe's complaint and will attend a meeting of board of guardians on Friday 15 May 1846 for this purpose. Witnesses whose evidence the Guardians wish to hear are: George Clarke, of Chardstock, Dorset. Cordwainer; Thomas Clarke, of Chardstock, Dorset. Labourer; Martha Clarke, of Chardstock, Dorset. Spinster; Frances Clarke, wife of John Clarke, of Chardstock, Dorset, Labourer; George Timothy Williamson, of Chardstock, Dorset, Gentleman; James Honebon, of Chardstock, Dorset, Yeoman. Guardians advise that witnesses should be summoned in order that they attend. Bond request that Graves send summonses and he will make sure the parties are summoned. Bond requests how and whom should serve the summonses. Annotation - Refer to Mr Graves and request him to communicate with the Clerk. 6 May 1846. Paper Number: 5420/A/1846. Poor Law Union Number 76. Counties: Devon and Dorset.
