Description
Content
Folios 140-141. Letter from Robert Tucker, Ashburton. Auditor for the Axminster Poor Law Union. Letter is regarding the parish of Charmouth. Tucker acknowledges receipt of letter 299/A/1846. and copy of letter from R Diment regarding disallowance of 12s in Overseers accounts Disallowance was made regarding journeys to the Treasurer and Tucker refers to a letter he sent to the Poor Law Commission on 23 April 1844 citing a similar disallowance made in the accounts of the overseer for Modbury in the Kingsbridge Union where the reasons are set out. Tucker adds that no charges of this kind have been made for many years in any of the parishes that form the unions of Newton Abbot, Totnes or Kingsbridge. Tucker states that as previous decisions have not been reversed he concluded that the Poor Law Commission approved of the reasons given. Tucker states he has no recollection of being informed that Diment was acting as Overseer and only became aware that he was when he received the book to write his reason for disallowance. Tucker considers if the overseer is unable to perform his duty, the overseer should pay the party employed to act for him. Tucker also states that Diment was correct in that he had allowed the charge for journeys during the first audit. Tucker had also allowed many others where no vouchers could be produced and expressly stated that in future similar charges would be disallowed. Tucker reported this at the conclusion of the Audit for Honiton and Axminster Poor Law Unions and in the letter of reply approval for this was given. Tucker states that if the allowance be given he would have to allow them in all accounts of which he is Auditor. Annotation - Mr Coode [George Coode, Assistant Secretary] 9 March 1846. Paper Number: 2561/A/1846. See also Paper Number: 299/A/1846. Poor Law Union Number 76. Counties: Devon and Dorset.
