Description
Content
Folios 607-608. Letter from R H Hodgson, Clerk to the Keighley Magistrates Court, to the Poor Law Board, to say that he had been informed by H B Farnall [Poor Law Inspector], Kettlethorpe Hall, near Wakefield, that the Board had copies of the proceedings of an enquiry which had investigated the conduct of the guardians of the poor in Keighley. He has been instructed to instigate legal action if the Board advises that there is sufficient evidence. He asks whether it is the Board's opinion that proceedings to bring the matter before the justices should be started. Annotated: William Golden Lumley [Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board] saying that it appears from the evidence that the situation is covered by existing laws. Requests for documents are only occasionally complied with. The nature of the offences could be stated and any further disclosure must be formally applied for by the clerk. 22 February 1855. Annotated: it is not the usual practice of the Board to provide copies of depositions or to comment on the advisability of legal proceedings. The enquiry instituted at Mr Ferrand's suggestion had been useful and as a result the Board expects that there will be no further irregularities. Paper Number: 5508/1855 and 6054/1855. Poor Law Union Number 571. Counties: Yorkshire West Riding.
