Folios 214-215. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, concerning his enquiry about the legality of the demand for payment by the overseer from Colchester [Essex] when returning a pauper [Samuel Smith] under suspended order to Sibton; the Poor Law Commission stated that 35 Geo 3 c 101 empowered the justices to order payment of expenses incurred through the suspension. If the overseer refused to pay, his goods could be distrained, and it was not necessary to refer to the guardians before payment. Annotated: Lefevre [John Shaw Lefevre, Poor Law Commissioner], approves, 1 October 1839. Paper Number: 6982/B/1839. Poor Law Union Number 432. Counties: Suffolk.
